Rust and Bone

onitsuka tiger ultimate

ring: Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts
The Plot: A killer whale trainer (Cotillard) suffers a debilitating accident during a show and finds strength in companionship with a bare-knuckle fighter.
The Film: Audiards Rust and Bone made my personal Top 10 List last year. So in order to shine a little bit more of a spotlight on a foreign language film that deserves as much attention as it can get this weekend Ive decided to reprint what I wrote about this film from onitsuka tiger by asics tiger corsair  my end of the year article.
Heres what I said a few weeks ago:
As with any good companion my favorite films are usually the ones that stick around - they resonate long after you leave the theater. Michael Hanekes Amour resonated, but I doubt well see too much of each other in the future. In this instance, Im the one splitting. Sorry Mike, it wasnt you, it was me.
As for Audiards Rust and Bone?
I had a dream about the film the same night I went to the screening of it. Sure it was a dream where I was mauled and thrashed about by a killer whale, with nothing torrid to offer from a REM sleeps construction of Marion Cottilard.
Want to understand the man behind this brand of movie criticism?
Just know that  asics gel nimbus post-Rust and Bone he dreamt of whales instead of cute French girls. For all I know it could have been the gory residue of Michael Andersons Orca: The Killer Whale bubbling up to the surface nodes after 35 years, but I doubt it, Rust and Bone left me haunted.
Marions Stephanie trains killer whales for a living - Matthias Schoenaertss Alain fights in Gypsy bare-knuckle parking lot brawls. Their occupations are crafted from the fantasy worlds of young adolescence. Girls dream of working old asics shoes with animals, boys dream of bei

ng them. The point being that Rust and Bone is built from the raw materials of dreams, so of course I dreamed about it.
The two lead characters have little in common with one another. Stephanies a success - until an accident during a Marineworld performance leaves her handicapped. Alains a wreck - until he jumps into the seedy underworld of bare-knuckle fighting and discovers that hes actually good at something. Both people are unlucky in - not so much sex, these are French people were speaking about after all - but love. Then they meet and become the Euro-film version of George Millers Master Blaster from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
Two different entities - half muscle, half mind - one complete package.
Rust and Bone is

like most of Jacques Audiards work - its sweet and sour. As if existence, and relationships, cant have too much of one and not enough of the other. Of course Audiards the eternal optimist - whatever brutality he put you through in his last film, A Prophet, he more than made up to you by closing time. Rust and Bones no different.
In this film love is a process - much like training nine-ton whales or dismantling a guys face in a fight are processes. It has its own victories and defeats. Consider Rust and Bone an overwhelming victory.
The Verdict: As I said earlier, this is one of my favorite films of 2012. Its been four weeks since I first watched Rust and Bone and I still think about this movie daily. Colliard and Schoenaerts are great together. We already knew Marion was a formidable actor, but if you havent seen Bullhead already, introduce yourself to Matthias Schoenaerts. These are two of my very favorite performances of 2012.
