He courts and marries a wealthy woman who is the daughter of a Colorado timber company owner, Serena Shaw (Jennifer Lawrence). Serena is an ambitious yet wounded woman who is able to cut timber and issue orders to the men working for her husband. Her experience in the industry includes tracking snakes with falcons to protect the workers. George Pemberton tells his men that she should be considered

The love story begins quickly with several establishing shots and soon Serena and George are back home after a quick honeymoon. George’s business partner Buchanan (David Dencik) takes an immediate disliking to onitsuka tiger corsair Serena and behind Georges back and with company money bribes the town sheriff (Toby Jones) who wants to buy the Pemberton land for a state park. George won’t sell for less than a million dollars even though the land was not worth that much before the stock market crash.
Serena has the feel of a European production and most of the extras and the crew are Czech. Director Susanne Bier cuts a smooth path through a tragic story with a sparing use of shots and masterful editing given the background of the novel.
Jennifer Lawrences jarring platinum blonde hair always seems misplaced in the North Carolina territory. She plays a mature role but we are often reminded that she is a young woman out of her element. Playing opposite Bradley Cooper there is a new chemistry beyond American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook and the question is why cast the two in yet another feature. Bradley Cooper gives a solid performance and is believable as a businessman with a shady past, who puts his wife before everything up to a certain point. Like many overly quick to boil love affairs, in time his attention is divided between Serena and Rachel (Ana Ularu), a woman who carries and gives birth to his child. Serena by this time has sunk into the memories of her catastrophic youth.
